Autumn Home Checks
Autumn is well on the way — is your home ready to protect you from cold, wet weather?
With the summer drought, dust and recent storms, your home’s guttering may need some attention. Now is the best time to check for blockages, leaks and damage so you can get them sorted before the wetter weather sets in.
It’s also worth checking the fascia and soffits around your home, particularly behind the gutters and along the roofline. These areas play an important role in protecting your home from the elements, and any visible damage could leave your property vulnerable to damp, water ingress and further problems during the autumn and winter months.
Don’t overlook your fascia and soffits
Your fascia boards sit along the edge of your roof and provide support for your guttering, while also helping to protect your roof and home from rain and moisture. Damaged, cracked or rotting fascia can affect the stability of your guttering and allow water to reach areas where it shouldn’t.
Soffits are located underneath the fascia and help protect the underside of your roof while providing essential ventilation to the roof space. Damaged soffits can restrict airflow and may contribute to moisture build-up, condensation and damp. Although, it is unlikely you will be able to see damage to your soffits - if there is damage to the fascia, the soffits are often replaced at the same time.
Keep your gutters working properly
Your gutters and downpipes are designed to direct rainwater safely away from your roof and walls. Leaves, moss, dust and other debris can build up over time, causing blockages and overflowing gutters. Leaking or damaged guttering can result in water running down your walls, potentially leading to damp, staining and damage to brickwork.
A quick inspection now could help prevent a much bigger problem later.
