Frequently Asked Questions...

  • How energy efficient are modern windows?

Modern windows are manufactured to reduce as much heat loss from the home as possible. Our PVCu windows all achieve an energy rating of A+ or A++ and a U-value of 1.3. Thermal efficiency is also vastly improved by double and triple glazed sealed units.

  • What is the difference between double and triple glazing?

Double glazed sealed units comprise two panes of glass with an insulating gap filled with argon gas whereas triple glazing has three panes of glass and two insulated gaps. The difference between double and triple glazing is now very small because of the improved performance of double glazing.  Whilst triple glazing is beneficial for better insulation and allowing less noise in, the extra weight of triple glazed sealed units puts extra strain on window hinges. Additionally, if you are concerned about noise levels being too high with double glazing, you may choose to have laminated double glazed sealed units which will reduce noise and will also protect indoor furnishings from harmful solar UV.

  • How secure are modern doors?

All of the doors we offer have security systems in place to help protect your home from intuders. Composite doors are the most secure due to the material of the door being stronger in itself. Additional security features include steel hinge bolts, anti-jemmy hinge bolts, hook locks running the length of the outer door frame, secure cylinder locks, steel mesh within the door that can't be cut through and internally glazed windows within doors to prevent easy access.

  • Do I need planning permission for a conservatory?

This depends on the size and location of the conservatory, for most houses it is included under permitted development. Building control is often only required if there is alteration to an existing external wall. If you do require planning or building control, we will advise you on how to go about the process.

  • Do I need trickle vents?

99% of houses are now required to have trickle vents when having new windows installed. Trickle vents are required to allow sufficient air circulation into and out of internal spaces. This also helps to reduce the build up of moisture and condensation within the home which could lead to mould and other damp damages as well as helping to remove ‘stale air’, bad odours and heat.

  • If scaffolding is needed, do I have to organise it?

No. If scaffolding is required, we organise and put it up, up to a week before the fitting is due to begin and we will take it down up to 2 weeks after installation is complete.

  • Do windows and doors come in standard sizes?

No. All windows and doors are made to measure, specific to the requirements of each property.

  • What happens if I have a problem operating my windows/doors after installation?

If you have any problems with your windows, doors, conservatory, guttering etc. after installation, contact our office immediately and we will send an engineer out to rectify the issue. Providing the product is within our guarantee period, this will be free of charge.

  • How do I know the job will be done properly?

All our fitters are trained, qualified, experienced and trusted. Our many (over 630) reviews on Checkatrade speak for themselves and give glowing recommendations so you can trust that we will deliver high quality products fitted to very high standards.

  • What happens to my old windows/doors/fascia, soffit and guttering?

We are licenced waste carriers and take away all of the rubbish from the old windows/doors etc. We have several recycling containers where we separate and recycle as many materials as we can.

  • Is all the wood replaced when I have new fascia and soffit?

Yes. To ensure long lasting installations, all wood is replaced and/or treated. All painted wood is removed back to the existing roof rafters. The rafters are then checked thoroughly for damage. If we find any minor decay, this will be treated with wood preserver, however if decay/damage is more serious, we will advise the that we should replace any wood as required.
