It’s quite amazing how many different styles of houses there are in Sussex, with period homes, cottages, barn conversions, modern developments and coastal homes all with very different architecture. With only so many windows to choose from (although there are quite a few!), how can you know what will best suit your home? Choosing windows that suit your home can be difficult, the key thing is to match the architecture of the building so they look ‘right’. Most homeowners in Sussex choose to replace windows with the same type as the existing ones to ensure they match the property, but there are still a wide range of options for material, profile and colour.

What types of windows are there and what is best suited to each property style?

Casement windows - these are hinged from one side, opening outwards.

Tilt and Turn - dual function, these windows can tilt inwards for ventilation or swing open on a side hinge.

Fixed windows - no opening.

Casement, tilt and turn and fixed windows are very versatile options that suit almost all properties. These are available in PVCu, wood and aluminium, all of which bring unique features. But it’s not just the material and opening that differs with these windows, there are various profiles including sculptured, flush sash and slim sash which all give a completely different look.

How does material make a difference?

PVCu is the modern choice for many windows due to its affordability, low maintenance and wide range of finishes including heritage timber-alternative styles. Whilst aluminium brings sleek, slim sightlines and is often seen in buildings with very modern architecture or as a replacement for old Crittall windows. Timber is more traditional and costly but a beautiful finish.

Colour and Finish

There are a range of colour choices for all types and materials of window and whilst the choice is ultimately yours, homes look best when the window colour is matched to the surrounding materials. Typically, brick homes work well with white, cream and anthracite grey; stone homes suit softer tones and pastel colours like chartwell green ; rendered homes look great with bold and contrasting colours; whilst homes with weatherboard/cladding suit black, white and natural tones. PVCu windows also have the option of a woodgrain or smooth finish - woodgrain finish is very popular for a more traditional look.

Glass Type

All new windows must be double or triple glazed to meet the current building standards, it is no longer an option to install new single glazed windows. But what is the difference between double and triple glazing? Whilst there is a small improvement in thermal performance with triple glazing, it does not bring a significant improvement on the insulation of your home when compared to double glazing. Triple glazing does however have greater noise reduction as a result of the extra pane of glass. Most homeowners opt for double glazing as it is less expensive and very good at insulating. Now for the question of clear or obscure glass….clear glass allows maximal light to enter the home and allows for great views of the outdoor whilst obscure glass is ideal for privacy. Trickle Vents

Ventilation plays a huge role in keeping a home healthy and comfortable, but it’s something many people only think about when problems like condensation or stuffy rooms appear. One small, often overlooked feature that can make a big difference is the trickle vent. In the UK, building regulations now (since 2022) require the use of trickle vents in most replacement and new-build windows to maintain healthy airflow. They help ensure a minimum level of ventilation without relying on windows being open all day long. This also helps to reduce the build up of moisture and condensation within the home which could lead to mould and other damp damages as well as helping to remove ‘stale air’, bad odours and heat.

Optional Extras and Upgrades

Integral blinds are a great option for privacy and shade whilst being low maintenance and child-safe, these are blinds which are built inside of the glass sealed units and operated with a magnet or remote.

Noise reduction glass is another upgrade, ideal for houses near busy roads, railways or in busy towns.

Laminated glass can be installed instead of toughened glass for extra security.

What are patio doors?
Patio doors are typically large glass doors that open onto a patio or outdoor area. They are most commonly sliding doors made up of two glass panels, where one panel slides behind the other to open.

What are bi-fold doors?
Bi-fold doors consist of tall, slim glass panels that fold and stack together, similar to an accordion, allowing a wide opening between indoor and outdoor spaces.

What difference can they make?

Patio doors create a smaller opening but take up very little space when opened.
Bi-fold doors can open up an entire wall, creating a seamless connection to the outdoors, but they require more space to operate.
When closed, patio doors offer a broader uninterrupted view, with framing only around two glass panels. Bi-fold doors have narrower views due to frames between multiple panels.
Patio doors are generally easier to operate, as they involve a simple sliding action, while bi-fold doors can require more effort to open and close.

Window and Door Installation in a Sussex Victorian Home

Insulation Services were contacted for solutions to improve the warmth of this Sussex Victorian home through improved energy efficiency of the windows and doors. Originally built with wooden, single glazing - we replaced most windows and doors with double glazed PVCu and added secondary double glazing to preserve the originality of one large window. We were also asked to advise on how to bring more natural light into the upstairs hallway.

The project began with an initial home visit to view the building, discuss options with the homeowner and record measurements. To preserve the original character of this Victorian home, we recommended installing windows and doors from The Residence Collection which are PVCu timber alternative products created in a heritage British style. The vertical sliding sash windows were sourced from Spectus window systems which have the authentic appearance of timber sash windows but with the modern benefits of PVCu. To solve the need for more light into a dark hallway, we recommended installation of a PVCu lantern roof window.

Type of Door Handle Explained

What are the different types of door handle and what is the difference?

Lever Lock, Offset Lever, Slam Shut and Thumb Turns explained...

There are three main types of door handle/locking system, these are lever/lever, latch lock (also known as offset lever) and slam shut. But what do these mean? Let's find out...

Lever Lock

A lever is the simplest type of door handle, commonly found on older doors, back doors and internal doors. The internal and external handles operate on the same spindle so the door can be opened from the inside and outside unless locked with a key. The door is locked by lifting the handle to throw the multipoint locks and turning the key locks the door. For example, if you go outside and the door shuts behind you, you will be able to open the door simply by pressing the lever down.

Latch Lock (Offset Lever)

Commonly found on modern front doors. This system also uses lever handles but the internal and external handles are operated independently from each other. When the door is closed, it is only possible to open it from the inside without using a key, it will lock from the outside. For full security, you need to lift the handle and turn the key to lock. For example, if you go outside and the door shuts behind you, you won’t be able to open it just by pressing the lever down, a key is required to unlock it from the outside.

Slam Shut

Slam shut doors usually have a bar or finger pull on the exterior of the door with a lever, thumb turn, key turn, finger pull or bar for opening from the inside. When the door is pulled/pushed closed, it locks. A key is required to open it from the outside and either a lever, thumb turn or key turn is required to open the door from the inside. Turning the key or the thumb turn to lock the door, engages the deadlock for full security.

What is a Thumb Turn?

A thumb turn lock is thumb-operated knob, similar size to a key that is turned to lock and unlock a door from the inside. A thumb turn can be added onto a slam shut door as a method of opening the door from the inside as well as to engage the dead lock for full security. A thumb turn can also be installed on a door with a lever or a latch lock to allow locking from the inside without requiring a key.

How does laminated glazing enhance security?

Laminated glass is made with a layer of vinyl plastic (a strong-binding resin) between the layers of glass which acts to hold the glass together even when shattered, similar to a car windscreen. Unlike toughened glass which breaks into lots of small pieces or tempered glass which breaks into shards, laminated glass gives extra strength and security with its ability to withstand impact, making it a lot more difficult for intruders to break through. Most existing windows and doors can be upgraded to have laminated double or triple glazed sealed units.

How is a multipoint locking system with a 3 star cylinder more secure?

A multipoint locking system has several locks along the edge of the door, ensuring high security and no vulnerable areas being left exposed. The 3 star rating indicates that the lock meets test standards and is considered safe and secure. Diamond secure 3 star cylinders ensure locks meet an even higher standard, preventing intruders ability to snap or drill the lock cylinder. Most locks can be upgraded in existing windows and doors.

How can the manufacturing of your door make a difference?

Composite doors specifically are often designed with strength in mind. Rockdoor composite doors have the option to be manufactured with a steel security mesh that cannot be cut through to ensure high security from break ins. Whilst Palladio composite doors are manufactured with an ultra strong monocoque structure resistant to impact. Apeer composite doors are also manufactured with an expanded mesh reinforcement within the core and a strong vertical steel bar, exceeding Police approved security standards.

PVCu doors can also have aluminium reinforcement within the PVCu panels for extra strength.

What is Secured by Design?

Secured by design is a Police governed accreditation scheme which ensures windows and doors meet specific security standards. All windows and doors which are approved by the Secured By Design (SBD) initiative, must meet PAS 24 standard which tests the overall strength and durability of a product. Manufacturers that are approved by SBD are inspected, tested and approved regularly to be secure against burglary.

They’re usually found at the top of modern windows and can be opened or closed manually with a simple slider.

Why do homes need trickle vents?

Moisture, indoor pollutants, and stale air build up in every home through everyday activities such as cooking, showering, drying clothes, or simply breathing. If this moisture has nowhere to escape, it can lead to condensation, damp patches and peeling paint, black mould, poor air quality and musty smells.

Trickle vents provide continuous background ventilation, helping prevent these issues by allowing moisture-laden air to escape and fresh air to enter.

Are trickle vents a requirement?

What are U Values and Why are They Important to Consider?

When you’re choosing new windows or doors for your home, you’ll soon come across the term U-value. It appears on brochures, energy ratings, and product specifications—but what does it actually mean? And why does it matter?

What Is a U-Value?

A U-value measures how easily heat passes through a building material. Think of it as a “heat loss score.”

Low U-value = better insulation, less heat loss, more energy efficiency
High U-value = poorer insulation and more heat escaping from your home

U-values are measured in W/m²K (watts per square metre per degree Kelvin).
The lower the number, the less energy your home loses—and the warmer and cheaper to heat it will be.

Why U-Values Matter When Choosing New Windows or Doors…

Windows and glazed doors are typically the weakest point in your home’s insulation. Even high-performance double glazing won’t insulate as well as a solid wall, but choosing products with the right U-values can make a significant difference.

Better insulation means you won’t need to heat your home as frequently/to as high temperatures to maintain a comfortable setting, helping you save money on your energy bills. Glazing with a low U value rating will also reduce cold spots, draughts and condensation, improving comfort. It’s also better for the environment due to less energy usage.

Understanding U-Values in Different Window Components

When you see brochures or information mentioning a U-value, it may apply to different parts of the window or door. This is important, because the glazing, frame, spacer bars and assembly will all have different thermal properties.

The Glazing U-Value (Ug) is the U-value of just the glazing, measured in the middle of the glass. Double glazing is typically around 1.2–1.4 W/m²K whilst triple glazing can be as low as 0.5–0.7 W/m²K.

BUT this value does not represent the performance of the whole window.

The Frame U-Value (Uf) is the U-value of the window frame material, which varies by design. PVCu is a very good insulator, timber is also a good insulator whilst aluminium requires thermal breaks to perform well.

The Whole Window U-Value (Uw) is the actual U-value you should compare when choosing windows or doors.

It measures the glazing, the frame, the spacer bars and how the unit is assembled. The whole-window U-values are always higher (worse) than the glazing values, but they reflect the real performance of the window.

What Is a Good U-Value for Modern Windows?

For UK homes, typical performance ranges are 1.2 to 1.8 W/m²K for double glazed windows and 0.5 to 1.2 W/m²K for triple glazed windows.

Manufacturers use a combination of technologies to lower U-values, including Low-E (Low Emissivity) Glass which has a microscopically thin coating that reflects heat back into the room. Argon or Krypton gas between the panes of double and triple glazing reduces heat transfer. The use of warm edge spacer bars to replace cold metal spacers helps to improve edge insulation and reduce condensation. Thermally broken frames for aluminium products.

U-Values vs Energy Ratings: What’s the Difference?

You might see windows labelled with an energy rating (A++, A+, B, etc.), similar to appliances. These ratings consider the U-value, solar heat gain coefficient (the amount of heat from the sun that can pass through the glazing), visible transmittance (how much light passes through the glazing) and air leakage. Energy ratings reflect overall performance, but U-value remains the most reliable indicator of insulation.

How can I improve the insulation of single glazed windows?

Whilst most homes are now equipped with double or triple glazed windows, some older homes may still have only single glazed windows. Now the obvious answer to this question would be to install new double-glazed windows, however, we understand that not everyone is in the position to be able to do that. Whether you are renting a home and your landlord isn’t keen on replacing the windows or perhaps you just can’t afford it right now… we have a few things that might just help you survive this coming winter.

Installing secondary double glazing is the most effective method of insulating single glazed windows. This involves installing a second frame and pane of glass on the inside of the window to create a layer of trapped air, slowing the transfer of heat. Although this is still a slightly costly and more ‘permanent’ solution .

You can create a DIY secondary double glazing with either clingfilm (for the most basic level of increased insulation) or clear Perspex from a DIY store and double-sided tape. Essentially, you want to try and create a similar effect of trapping a layer of air between the glass of the window and the clingfilm or Perspex. Thick double-sided tape (e.g. foam tape) is recommended. Stick the tape all the way around the edge of the glass, then stick the cling film or Perspex to the remaining side of the tape. To finish it off, run a layer of normal tape around the edge to seal against the window frame/wall.

The other option to improve the insulation of single glazing is to install heavy curtains or insulated blinds, to help keep the warmth in your home.

Project Details:

Insulation Services were appointed by clients after checking our reviews on Checkatrade and visiting our showrooms.

Insulation Services visited the home to discuss options and designs for all windows and doors; timescales and budgets were also discussed. The bespoke quotation was prepared which included full details of the proposed products, the price, together with terms and conditions – all set out to fully inform the customer of everything involved. A set of pictures accompanied the quotation to illustrate each design style, layout and relative sizes.

The work involved a series of 4 key stages:

3. Risk Assessment and Method Statement

The windows and doors products are all PVCu – selected for their style, performance and value for money. The front door is an ‘Assington’ style door featuring a high security locking system and an Irish Oak exterior and white interior, an obscure toughened glass sealed unit (to allow light into the hallway) and antique black door furniture. The windows are ‘A’ rated with 6 chambers for improved energy efficiency; they are internally glazed with argon filled 28 mm double glazed sealed units.

We deployed a 2-man team to carry out the removal and installation work, liaising closely with the customer for the sequence of working (to cause least disruption and disturbance). All windows and doors were carefully and safely installed within one week on site.

All waste materials were removed from site daily and the outside of the house was tidied up on completion. A follow up visit was arranged to address the last minor adjustments and to demonstrate how the windows opened for cleaning.
